Rustic Garden

i settle in my seat trying to understand why it was
solely the waitress’s choice as to whether i get three
chicken strips or four with my entrée     john walks
over to see the daily offerings before deciding on his
before-meal slice of pie     jason & paul discuss the
old west décor of this place & then both choose the
fried catfish sandwich platter that comes with an
apple-sweet coleslaw     a mid-september day in
missouri with dear friends     a good memory     a
great treasure you stumble upon & carry down every
street

            john says he once found
an old elvis head that had
            two diamond eyes

My Daughter Visits Her Old Man

it was for sure a conversation about diabetes
or cpap machines     low-carb tortilla shells
or how many nightly meds i’m up to now
but i honestly don’t remember which one it was
when my grandson interrupted by walking a
crooked line spinning in a circle-ish manner
throughout the living room & chanting the
words over & over again      i wanna rock     rock!
i wanna rock     rock!     we laughed & joined
along chanting with him a couple times until a
noise in the other room caught his attention
causing him to stop & go silent     unsure
what it was he went to investigate & we
went back into our conversation
