Before the Day is Over
For Caleb
Twenty minutes before sunset
my grandson wants to go to the park.
He’s twelve and I know swinging high
on squeaky chains will not be his choice
much longer. Soon sports and girls
will lasso his attention, hold it
for years to come. The light wilts
as a breeze ruffles the leaves.
Birds chirp as crickets harmonize.
Lightning bugs punctuate the air
like drops of sunshine. We catch them
then open our hands, watch them fly.
