In the hallway
outside our neighboring doors
she looked at me
and halfway smiled
in a certain way
She was thinking
he must have heard me
and I had

Robert Estes, who lives in Somerville, Massachusetts, got his Physics PhD from UC Berkeley and had some interesting experiences using physics, notably on a couple of US-Italian Space Shuttle missions. Since then, 40-odd of his poems have appeared in literary journals, including Gargoyle, Cola Literary Review, The Moth, the museum of americana, Anacapa Review, Juniper, Constellations, and Sierra Nevada Review.
