Ghost Garden
I walk past the garden bed
where we released
my mother’s ashes.
Two cats are buried there.
Sunflowers and pink rogersia
thrive where death
makes a home. Sometimes
by a light of fireflies,
I think I see my mom
and those cats. The moon
reddens above the roof
and every year
flowers return.
.
In Late May
We look at Lake Superior
while we have eggs and toast.
The sun sews a blanket
that we’re going to need
on the ferry. The Lake looks
back at us. We hope
she’s a benevolent goddess.
Sand Island basks
and sunbathes. Or trembles
when winter’s hands
grab and strangle. For now,
it’s 20-minutes
to Madeline Island, spray
coating our beards, thin
fog hiding the dock.
