RESCUE
Chainsaws are hacking
through the ice.
Twenty brawny men
fall upon winter
with a bloody vengeance,
strike out at
its precious frozen waters
with their most raucous weapons.
A child has fallen through
a weak point in the surface.
For now, half the town
keep accident and tragedy
at arm’s length
with quick action,
truckloads of equipment.
But the lake glares back
at rescuer and bystander alike.
It’s a smug kidnapper
with all the time in the world
to name its price.
