Janis La Couvée

Standing at Ken Forde Boat Launch

unfettered fetch, landfall after 123 kilometres
waves gathering momentum, energy, intensity
to crash in fury on the shore
water a roiled jade
small gulls huddle in flocks
take flight to ride the air
wings dip and turn
immature eagles whirl overhead
herons skim the beach
alight in perfect two-point landing
scan tidal pools from rocky perch—tasty morsels await
tomorrow—storm subsides,
soft water
