UPSTAIRS HAND

Wet shoe prints lead upstairs
in ever-decreasing wetness
until they disappear, and the maker
could be anywhere around
the next corner where I want
to turn on the light but am afraid
another hand already occupies
the light-switch position.

WAITING

The woman wears her coat
buttoned close to her neck
while her purse dangles
from her left hand
waiting for someone
to pass by close enough
to whack with its weight.

Rain continues to fall
outside the sheltered eave,
below the granite stairs,
onto the parking lot
where the lone pedestrian
strolls with her blue umbrella.

The woman’s purse swings
in pendulum rhythm
to rain drops,
to footsteps
splattering away.

THIN AIR

A single woman sits
on a chair facing
another chair, empty.

She smokes a cigarette,
stares as if listening
to a friend’s conversation.

Nods her head,
blows smoke
away from her
imaginary friend
as it dissipates
into thin air.
