Wet January

A misplaced month,
taken down from the wrong shelf
in the aerial larder.

Blame it on the cracked windshield
of a spider web in the garden,
a peacock butterfly strutting
at the wrong angle
on an algae-blotted fence,

the numerology of ants
on the patio,
the strange dances
of Koi in the pond.

The lawn pulling out its hair
for the spring can’t quite believe
what it missed.
